Your vehicle’s braking system is one of its most important safety systems, so brake maintenance should never be left until something goes wrong. Regular brake inspections can help identify worn or damaged components before they affect braking performance, helping give you confidence that your brakes will respond when you need them most.

At Lismore Automotive Service, we recommend having your brakes checked as part of regular vehicle servicing, as well as having any unusual brake noise, vibration or changes in braking performance investigated promptly. A small warning sign can sometimes indicate wear that needs attention before it develops into a more expensive repair.

Brake pads are a key part of a disc braking system. When you apply the brakes, the pads are pressed against the brake rotors, creating friction that slows and stops the vehicle. This process generates considerable heat, and repeated braking gradually wears the friction material on the pads.

Brake pad wear varies considerably depending on the vehicle, brake components, driving style, traffic conditions, terrain and how heavily the vehicle is used. Frequent stop-start driving, towing, carrying heavy loads and driving in hilly areas can all increase brake wear. This is why there is no single kilometre figure that accurately predicts when every set of brake pads needs replacing.

Squealing or squeaking brakes can sometimes indicate worn brake pads, as some pads incorporate a wear indicator designed to produce a warning noise when the friction material becomes low. However, noise does not always mean the pads are worn, and worn pads do not always make an obvious noise.

Other warning signs include a brake pedal that feels different, increased stopping distance, steering wheel or pedal vibration when braking, the vehicle pulling to one side, grinding noises or a brake warning light appearing on the dashboard. Any change in braking performance should be checked by a qualified mechanic rather than ignored.

At Lismore Automotive Service, our 65 Point Vehicle Inspection Report includes checking brake components for signs of wear and deterioration during a car service. If attention is required, we can explain what has been identified and recommend appropriate repairs or replacement parts for your vehicle and driving conditions.

How Do I Know If My Brakes Need Attention?

Brake components are critical to vehicle safety and are not an area where shortcuts should be taken. Brake repairs and component replacement require the correct parts, tools, inspection procedures and knowledge of the vehicle’s braking system.

At Lismore Automotive Service, we provide brake inspections, maintenance and repairs using quality parts, with eligible repairs covered by the Repco Nationwide Warranty. Depending on the vehicle and the issue identified, our brake services can include:

If you are experiencing unusual brake noise, vibration or changes in braking performance, don't wait for the problem to become more serious. Contact Lismore Automotive Service in Lismore to arrange a professional brake inspection or discuss your vehicle's braking needs.

Brake Maintenance & Repairs in Lismore

Working Brakes Save Lives: Brake Maintenance & Repairs

Discover the importance of regular car servicing with Lismore Automotive Service in Lismore to keep your vehicle in top condition, ensuring safety and reliability on your next road trip.

When planning a road trip, what's the first thing that comes to your mind? If you're thinking about the route, snacks, or playlists, you're not alone. However, ensuring your car is up to the task is arguably the most critical step in your prep work. Regular vehicle servicing plays a pivotal role in guaranteeing your car's road trip readiness, and here's why.

Safety First:
Above all, regular car servicing is paramount for safety. A well-maintained vehicle is significantly less likely to encounter mechanical failures that could lead to dangerous situations on the road. Servicing ensures critical systems like brakes and steering are in top-notch condition, so you can enjoy peace of mind while navigating those scenic routes.

The Engine's Heartbeat:
Think of engine oil as your vehicle's lifeblood. Regular oil changes during servicing keep the engine running smoothly, preventing overheating and excessive wear. This is especially important during long drives, where the engine works harder for extended periods.

Fuel Efficiency Matters:
Nobody wants to spend more on fuel than necessary, especially during an adventure that might already be stretching your budget. Regular servicing keeps your car's engine in an optimal state, ensuring you get the best possible mileage and keeping those fuel stops less frequent and more affordable.

Avoid Unexpected Breakdowns:
There's little worse than your road trip being cut short by a vehicle breakdown. Regular check-ups reduce this risk by identifying and rectifying issues before they become serious problems. From worn belts to aging hoses, preventative maintenance can save the day.

Prolong Your Car's Lifespan:
Every service is an investment in your vehicle's future. Consistent maintenance helps your car to last longer, ensuring it's not just ready for one road trip but many more to come.

Tyre Talk:
Tyres are your car's only contact with the road, so their condition is non-negotiable. Servicing includes tyre checks for wear and tear, ensuring they're properly inflated and have enough tread to keep you safely on the road in all conditions.

Battery Life:
The last thing you want is a dead battery in the middle of nowhere. Regular servicing tests your battery's health, ensuring it's charged and ready to go. It's a simple check that can save a lot of headaches.

Brake Assurance:
Effective braking is crucial, especially on unfamiliar roads. Servicing assesses your brakes for wear, ensuring you can always stop safely and on time.

Keeping Cool:
Your car's cooling system prevents the engine from overheating. During service, this system is checked for leaks and coolant levels, ensuring your engine stays cool under pressure.

Electrics and Lights:
Functioning lights and electrical systems are not just for your convenience but also for your safety. Regular servicing ensures everything from your headlights to indicator lights and the electrical dashboard is in working order.

Suspension and Steering:
A smooth ride isn't just about comfort; it's about control. Servicing ensures your suspension and steering components are in good condition, making your journey as smooth and safe as possible.

Exhaust Systems:
A healthy exhaust system is vital for your car's performance and the environment. Regular checks can detect leaks or damages that could affect your vehicle's efficiency and safety.

Fluid Levels:
From brake fluid to power steering fluid, maintaining the correct levels is crucial for your car's operation. Regular servicing ensures all fluids are topped up and replaced as necessary.

Environmental Considerations:
A well-maintained car is also a more environmentally friendly one. Efficient engines produce fewer emissions, and properly disposed of service materials minimise environmental impact.

Peace of Mind:
Ultimately, regular servicing offers peace of mind. Knowing your vehicle has been professionally checked and maintained lets you focus on enjoying your road trip, rather than worrying about what could go wrong.

Regular servicing is not just a chore—it's an essential part of vehicle ownership that ensures safety, reliability, and performance. Before setting off on your next road trip, remember that a well-serviced car is your best companion on the open road. Ensure a Safer Driving Experience with a Written Vehicle Safety Inspection Report to Diagnose Any Existing or Potential Issues.

Our Vehicle Safety Inspection Report is free with every service at Lismore Automotive Service in Lismore. Our qualified mechanics will visually check over the important components of your vehicle and provide you with a written report on the condition of your vehicle. We can then help you understand any concerns which may need to be attended so that you can drive safe this winter with Lismore Automotive Service and Repco Authorised Service.

Here are important Safe Autumn/Winter Driving Tips

So what steps can you take to make sure your car is set for safe winter/spring motoring?

Everyone can relate to the moment of realising you've neglected to check your car's wipers when rain begins to fall. Living in Australia exposes wipers to intense sunshine all year round, thus resulting in frequent deterioration. Investing in a quality wiper blade such as Trico can help to keep you safe on the roads regardless of the weather conditions. Lismore Automotive Service can advise you on which wiper blade or assembly best suits your vehicle.

During cold weather, the fluids and components of your car may be adversely affected, especially coolants, oils, and items such as glow plugs for diesel vehicles. Having your car routinely serviced by a knowledgeable technician who is aware of the proper components and items for preserving optimal performance is recommended. We utilise top-grade NGK glow plugs and Penrite oils and fluids designed for use in Australia.

As seasons come and go, your driving habits should adapt. During rainy days or moments of low visibility, slow your speed and ensure that you keep a safe amount of space between yourself and the car ahead. Be smart and secure a service appointment or get a 65 Point Vehicle Inspection Report to ensure that you remain on the safe side.

Pay attention to any suspicious indicators that your brakes require maintenance, including a shaky, spongy, or sluggish brake pedal, abnormal noises, or difficulty maneuvering when pushing on the brakes. To be safe, it is best to have a specialist evaluate the condition of your brakes.

Driving with bald tyres is perilous; thus, you should inspect your tyres now to make sure they possess enough tread. If you recognise lopsided tyre deterioration, it could point to the fact that your shock absorbers or some other fundamental element of your steering and suspension systems are requiring servicing or repair.

Driving on tyres which are not inflated correctly will not only cost you extra fuel money; it can also impact your stopping distance. You can usually find manufacturers recommendations on a panel inside the driver side door.

Mazda Car Service and Repairs in Lismore

Brake fluid plays a crucial role in the safety of your vehicle by transferring the pressure you apply to the brake pedal to the actual brakes. Without it, your brakes simply wouldn’t function, and as everyone knows, a car without brakes is incredibly dangerous. Even slightly compromised brakes can pose a serious risk.

Brake fluid has a tendency to absorb moisture over time, which can compromise its effectiveness. Brake systems generate high temperatures, and brake fluid is specifically designed to have a high boiling point to prevent it from evaporating. However, when too much moisture builds up, the boiling point is lowered, making the fluid more prone to boiling under heat. This can lead to reduced brake fluid levels, ultimately affecting your vehicle’s braking performance and increasing stopping distances.

Why Is Brake Fluid Replacement Necessary?

In addition to reducing effectiveness, moisture-contaminated brake fluid can lead to corrosion within the braking system. Over time, this can damage components such as the callipers, wheel cylinders, and anti-lock braking systems (ABS). Regular replacement helps to extend the lifespan of these parts and maintain optimal braking performance.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it actively absorbs moisture from the surrounding environment, even through microscopic openings in the brake system. This is why regular maintenance is essential to ensure safety.

Your vehicle’s manufacturer will specify how often the brake fluid should be replaced—typically outlined in the logbook service schedule. At Lismore Automotive Service, we recommend replacing it every two years as a general guideline. However, it’s equally important to have it checked during each routine service. A professional mechanic can assess the moisture content in the fluid and check for any leaks or other signs of wear that might require earlier attention.

How Often Should Brake Fluid Be Replaced?

Yes, at Lismore Automotive Service, we provide a comprehensive 65-point vehicle inspection upon request with every full service. This includes a detailed review of your brake fluid, master cylinder, front and rear discs and pads, callipers, cylinders, and more. Our expert mechanics will assess the condition of your braking system and notify you if the brake fluid needs replacing or if any additional brake system repairs or maintenance are required. Regular checks can catch problems early, ensuring your safety on the road.

Maintaining your brake fluid is an essential part of car ownership, and neglecting it could lead to costly repairs or, worse, compromised safety. If you’re due for a brake fluid replacement or simply want peace of mind, book a service with Lismore Automotive Service in Lismore. Our team will make sure your braking system is in top condition, so you can drive with confidence.

Learn why brake fluid is essential for your vehicle’s safety, how it works, and why regular maintenance by Lismore Automotive Service is crucial for optimal braking performance and to prevent costly repairs.

Brake Fluid: What It Is and Why It Matters

Brake Fluid: What Is It and Why Do You Need It?

Do you drive an Automatic vehicle? Then you might not even be aware that there is a clutch in your vehicle. Without it, the gears in your car will not change.

Lismore Automotive Service in Lismore know all about repairing and servicing these systems including clutches, cables and fluids. Learn more below.

The clutch is one of the most important elements of your vehicles driving operation. Your engine is what causes your wheels to spin, but what happens when your car needs to stop? The engine shouldn't stop spinning but the wheels need to. It's the clutch that allows this to happen. The clutch allows the transfer of power from the engine to the wheels to be interrupted while a gear is being changed or while the car is stationary and the engine continues to run.

Some vehicles have hydraulic clutches - when you press the clutch pedal, the clutch fluid moves the pressure from the pedal through to the clutch and disengages the power transmission. Leaking clutch fluid can cause all kinds of problem in your vehicle so it is very important to monitor it regularly. At Lismore Automotive Service in Lismore we check your clutch fluid, hydraulic system or clutch cables for you in the course of our free 65 Point Vehicle Inspection - which you can request as part of every car service.

You should have your clutch inspected if:

What signs to look for if your clutch is not performing

You notice a burnt ‘toast' or ‘burning rubber' smell in your car, or smoke from under vehicle

Your vehicle is slipping out of gear for no reason

Your clutch is not disengaging fully, or your clutch is sticking or shuddering

If your clutch is showing any of the problems above - it could mean any number of faults. Clutch problems are difficult to diagnose by symptoms alone because many issues cause the same symptoms, depending on the vehicle and type of engine. The best way to deal with clutch shuddering, slipping or noise is contact your local mechanics at Lismore Automotive Service today.

We can perform clutch diagnostics, service and repairs on most makes and models right here in our Lismore workshop.
